The school caters for children from 4 to 11 years.

The school currently has 208 pupils on roll, 93 boys and 115 girls. From September 2009 the admission number has been reduced to 30, as this is the limit for infant class sizes.  We asked for this reduction in order to avoid mixed infant classes.

The Building and surrounding area

Filton Hill Primary is situated on the outskirts of Bristol. Pupils attend, in the main, from the immediate surrounding area.

Filton Hill is a single storey building comprising of almost symmetrical layout. The setting is an attractive one with grassy areas completely surrounding the school and plenty of trees, bushes and flower borders. There is a vast field space, where sports activities take place and playtimes are spent, weather permitting. There is also a conservation area and two hard surfaced playgrounds at the rear of the school. There is an activity area on a safety surface. The children have basket ball hoops, football goals and equipment to play with.

We also have a very popular tyre park!

The building is now over 50 years old and is due to be upgraded.  At that time a purpose built reception unit will be built, as well as new group rooms, changing rooms for KS2 and a new office block.

A temporary Elliot building has been used for a fourth infant class room in the past, but from September 2008 an existing local pre-school, Nutfield Grove, moved into the premises.  Currently, they are fundraising for a permanent building.

We have a bicycle shed and a scooter rack, which your children are welcome to use.

The building is well set up for disabled pupils with ramps and wide doorways.

The Curriculum

In line with most primary schools, Filton Hill offers pupils the full range of core and foundation subjects and R.E. In YR pupils work to the Foundation Stage curriculum and corresponding goals. "Learning through play" is our aim.
From Y1 upwards we deliver a daily Literacy and Numeracy session, usually each morning. These subjects are well planned and well delivered by all staff.
Science is a successful subject at Filton Hill and we are also very proud of our ICT capability. We have a superb computer suite which is used by all pupils weekly. ICT skills of both staff and pupils are very good.
All pupils follow the R.E. syllabus although parents have the right to withdraw their child(ren) from this subject if their beliefs differ. Lessons in R.E. include the study of a variety of faiths, handling artefacts and visits to places of worship.

Guitar lessons and keyboard lessons are being offered and provided by a specialist music teacher.  At the moment the Y4 children are learning to play the violin!  We also have a very popular choir.

Coaches visit the school to run clubs at lunch time and sometimes after school and holiday schemes.

Special Needs at Filton Hill

We are especially proud of the facilities we offer to all pupils here, but none more so than those with special needs. This may be for support in areas of concern or where a pupil has extra abilities. The team is lead by Mrs Marriott, ably assisted by all teachers and Learning Support Assistants. Individual programmes are tailored to need and may be delivered in class alongside the "normal" curriculum or in small or individual withdrawal groups.
Mrs Marriott will be pleased to discuss issues privately with parents on request. She works in school on Thursday and Fridays.

The teachers regulary update the Gifted and Talented register.  The children attend workshops within the local area.  In the past children have attended gym, history, science, maths, literacy, music and ICT workshops.

Fundraising and charities

The 'Parents and teachers association' are a group of parents and teachers, who fundraise for the school.  They arrange events throughout the year; Discos, Christmas and Summer Fayres, Easter egg hunt and much more.

If you are interested in joining this group they will be more than pleased.

We support the charity 'Children's Hospice South West'.  When we fundraise for big national events like 'Red Nose Day' we send half the proceeds to this charity.

We also support projects via our local church.

In-service days and holidays

All schools have five in-service days during the year.  On these days teachers are trained and kept up to date with developments in education.  We had two in-service days in September.  The others will probably be in term 6 2010.

The governors have decided not to authorise holidays in terms 1 and 5.  In term 1 it is very important the children settle with their new teacher and class.  In term 5 important assessments take place, including the Y6 Sats.  This decision is in line with county policy.

We do appreciate holidays in term time are more expensive, but research have shown that children with below 85% attendance year after year will be behind a whole level by the time they reach Y6.

Parents are entitled to request 10 days holiday in the year, but only the head teacher is able to authorise any absence.

Behaviour and well being

All members of staff care for the well being of all the children.  Bullying is not tolerated at Filton Hill in any shape or form.

The children are encouraged to talk to their class teacher or any other member of staff about any concerns.

We encourage the children to be 'good citizens' and earn stamps for their 'good citizen' cards.  Stamps can be earned by being polite, helpful, telling the truth, hold doors, pick up litter, do extra homework and so on.  Once a card is completed the child goes to the head teacher for a special prize!

We also celebrate achievements on a Friday afternoon.  Each teacher chooses a 'Star of the week' and the stars receive a certificate and a sticker.  A photograph is taken weekly and displayed in the entrance hall.  The children also bring in trophies and certificates from out of school activities.  You are welcome to attend this weekly service of praise on Fridays 1:10 pm.

One of our teaching assistants, Jayne Baxter, is able to offer counselling to any child going though a difficult time.

Any concerns are reported to the head teacher immediately.

From September 2009 Mr Hornsby is now responsible for 'Pupil voice', which means he works closely with the children and become more aware of the issues the children have.

When Ofsted came they did notice the good relationships we have at the school and visitors comment on the positive atmosphere.

Break fast club and after school care.

The school is open for Breakfast at 8 am every morning.  Currently the club is run by two teaching assistants and cost £1.

Please ensure your children do not arrive later than 8:30 am for their breakfast as the teaching assistants need to clear the hall.

If your child is entitled to a free school dinner, the governors have decided they are also entitled to a free breakfast.

If your child does not attend breakfast club, please wait by the gate until 8:45 am.

For the safety of all the children no parents are allowed in the corridors.  Please report to the office with any concerns.  Thank you.

Eventually, we would like to offer after school care at Filton Hill.  Currently, we do not have enough interested parents to make this viable, but at some point in the future I am sure this project will get off the ground!  We do send out questionaires on a regular basis, if you are interested please ensure you return the form next time!

Parents/school partnership

We welcome any support you are able to offer the school.  You may be able to go on school trips, walk the children up to church, support art or cooking activities, help with reading or offer an after school club.  Please talk to your child's class teacher about how you can support your child and the school.

If a parent helps on a regular basis we do undertake a CRB check.

The school offers consultation evenings three times a year.

If you look under the 'Newsletters' section of this website you will see the school prospectus is also published here.  This will give you much more information about our school.

If you have any concerns about your child please do not hesiate to make an appointment to see your child's teacher or Mrs. Lemming.

Pre - school

Many of your children have attended the excellent Nutfield Grove pre- school.  For many years we have negotiated with them to come to Filton Hill and we have finally succeeded!  The pre - school opened on the 4th September 2008 and will follow the same term dates as the main school.  We are very excited about this addition to our facilities, as the children will be able to integrate into reception so much easier.

The pre - school is called 'Jack and Jill at Filton Hill', a name suggested by one of our Y6 pupils.
